Dreadlock Maintenance
Maintenance matters.
Regular dreadlock maintenance is essential for a healthy head of lokks that look as good as they feel. We use the unparalleled Sista System method to achieve lokks that are stunning every time. No interlocking or hatching, no waxes or chemicals, just stunning natural lokks. Browse below to learn more about our rates and services.
How much does it cost?
We charge flat rates for straight forward jobs (see below) and $120/hr, or $30 per 15 minute increment for more complex jobs ($160/hr for Senior Lokkticians).
The cost depends on a number of factors including:
How many dreads you have (the more lokks you have, the longer it will take)
Whether your dreads are new or mature
Whether you want lengths as well as bases tidied
How long it has been since your last maintenance appointment
If you have serious issues that need addressing (ie. repair, bulking, dread surgery, wax removal).
“These ladies are so amazing at what they do. When they aren’t saving people’s heads from mass destruction, they’re saving and changing lives for the better. These are some pretty special people. Oh, and their lokk technique is second-to-none.”✩✩✩✩✩

How often do I need to get my lokks maintained?
Though it’s largely down to personal preference, mature lokks of straw size all through to big, fat 5-cent coin lokks only need maintenance from a Lokktician once every 3-6 months for roots and regrowth, depending of course on hair type, how fast your hair grows, how well they’re cared for at home…and how much you dig the “au naturel” look! Some clients with very mature lokks may only come in to see us once a year. It’s all good.
For active kids, or clients with micro dreads, we recommend coming in for a tidy-up every 4-6 weeks to keep on top of things. These conditions are more susceptible to lokks becoming matted together at their base (AKA congoed) if left longer than a month or two between salon visits, which would increase your time in the chair at subsequent appointments since dread surgery would then be required.
Baby dreads require a lot more care, in the beginning, to get them off to a good start. For all dreadlock sizes EXCEPT micro, we recommend coming back within 4 weeks of installation for your first maintenance session, and then 6 weekly after that until maturity (usually around the 6 month mark) Microdreads will require maintenance every fortnight until they have reached maturity.
How long does it take?
Most straightforward jobs will take no more than an hour or two. If you have 65 lokks or less that have been regularly maintained and are just in need of a base tidy up, you’re looking at approximately one hour. Top knot base maintenance only would be between 30 - 45 minutes. If you have more than 65 lokks, or its been a long time since we’ve seen you in the chair, it could take anywhere from 1.5 hours up to 4 hours for bigger repair jobs. If you’re concerned, its always best to get in touch before making your booking to discuss your situation, so that we know how long to put aside for you on the day of your appointment.
